MONDAY 19 JULY - SUNDAY 25 JULY, 2004

Sometimes I just don't think my brain works as well during summer months. It's the heat. This past week has been a welcoming of a several-month long escapade through the humidity and upwardly mobile temperatures that dominate this time of the year. At home it becomes a bit like a sweat-box... but almost never, in my opinion, hot enough to warrant the week and futile attempts at cooling that my air-conditioning unit would provide. Thus... I do not go that route and, instead, find myself moving at slower paces and with less enthusiasm and "brain-power" than normal. Perhaps that is the way it should be? After all... I do spend the most of my time all over the place, meaning pretty much anywhere BUT my apartment. I keep the fans humming (four in all and the windows open with shades drawn in order to keep the bulk of the afternoon sun OUT Of the living area. My cat is fine with it all... and he spends the entire time in this abode so why would I be inclined to turn on an air-conditioner that puts my electricity bill into the stratosphere when I am rarely here to enjoy it's result? If it didn't matter to me that I would be padding the Electric company fruitfully I would leave my air on during the day while I toiled in the offices of SONY in Culver City... but it seems a waste of energy and cash to come back for a few hours of better temperatures... when in fact the evenings in Southern California tend to cool down rather well on their own anyway. So... you are wondering if there is a point behind discussing the merits and pitfalls of using an air-conditioner during the summer months in my Southern California apartment? No... not really... except to say that my brainwaves have not been functioning at top order during the afternoons on the weekend and thus there wasn't a great deal of originality involved in coming up with the topic to write about. Summer is most definitely at it's peak this week. We are there and it isn't going away anytime too soon. Is it unbearable? Not by a long shot. Although I much prefer the weather that affords me the bundles of blankets and wearing a jacket... I am not "hating" the heat that comes as a part of the July experience at all. Sure... there are moments as I wipe my brow that I wish it were fall or spring... but it isn't... is it... so I may as well be where I am. This week I will ACT AS IF I were a bit cooler than I am. This will create the feeling that the temperatures are not as bad as I make them out to be. Thus... it is summertime but the living is easy... Have a wonderful week out there wherever you may be. BE HAPPY. BE WELL.

TAO WORD OF THE DAY:
MONDAY 19 JULY - SUNDAY 25 JULY, 2004
INVISIBILITY
There was once a roadside vendor who sold rheumatism formulas to the passersby. He was a cheery old man who was faithfully at his spot for years. One day a young bully began to harass the vendor. The old man tried very hard to avoid the confrontation, but eventually the bully become convinced that he had a coward to abuse as he pleased. When the moment of attack came, the old man defeated him with superior boxing skills. Significantly, the old man was never seen again. He had manifested his superiority at a critical moment, but once he had exposed himself, he disappeared. In this competitive world, it is best to be invisible. Go through life without showing off, attracting attention to yourself, or making flamboyant gestures. These will only attract the hostility of others. The wise accomplish all that they want without arousing the envy or scorn of others. They make achievements only for the sake of fulfilling their inner yearnings. Yet it is inevitable that you will have to prove yourself at one time or another. When that is necessary, then you must marshal all your skills and do your very best. Prove yourself when it is demanded, and when you must prove yourself be superior. At that moment, it is no time to talk of philosophy and humility. Act. Do. Then fade back into invisibility.

LONDON CALLING
A mock victim on a stretcher is taken past police officers during a simulated nerve gas attack at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham, July 18. The simulation, which police said was the biggest of its kind ever staged in the UK, involved more than 2,000 fire, ambulance and police officers along with army and Red Cross volunteers who played the role of contaminated casualties.

THE ONLY TYPE OF NEGATIVE YOU'LL FIND ON THIS SITE
THE FUNKY (sort of) NEGATIVE : (PROOF THAT ANYTHING CAN AND WILL HAPPEN): Fireworks light up the night sky over the Queen Elizabeth 2 as she and her sister ship, the Queen Mary 2, begin a historic crossing of the Atlantic Ocean from New York to Southampton, England April 25, 2004. It's the first time in Cunard Line's 164-year history of operating transatlantic liners that two of their ships have sailed in tandem. This will also mark the farewell transatlantic eastbound voyage from New York for the QE2.
